My colleague, seehui documented the assembly steps. She will gather and post up later.
so much fun there...
Next to put up crankset and wheel..
Would good if you could go thru step by step in the assembly process. Suggested steps...
Assembling the Headset and Suspension Fork
Assembling the Bottom Bracket and Crankset
Assembling the Handlebar and all the Commands
Assembling the Brakes, Front and Rear Gears
Assembling the Seat post and Saddle
Assembling the Wheels and Tyres
Please do tis in top window BYOB. Thanks.
I use this type of tyre, Continental GP Black Chili 26 x 1.00 and later Bronx Slick 26 x 1.00 that more cheaper for training use, with Schwalbe tube at >100psi. Because it was a low rolling resistant tyre, speed was increase on flat but sometime i felt uneasy when doing downhill at fast speed. It really stick good but when i want to make a sharp fast turn, i felt it a bit hard on my handlebar like it dont want to follow. Technically i dont know why. I think, it might because of the tyre size, or my weight = 84kgs, or bike frame profile ( Y type FS ) with standard front fork or my 120mm stem. Any comment from expert user?
Anyway this type is very good when use on flat smooth road but must be more careful when on down slope. When not offroad, i prefer this fast slick, it has a good performance and look nice. I like it very much.
A new try to sleek tyre at mtb, Maxxis Detonator 26x1.00
How much for duties/taxs for MTB frame?
25% duty to bicycle frame for value over RM500
He he.. i always receive this letter during my BYOB time for several item. Had to pay duties before release with the word ' for personal use'.
EC,
You have all the items except the frame, right? Looks like this takes the longest to arrive. Can you take a picture of the two wheels which are already fixed. I believe you should start to look into tubes and tyres now. Don't get the knobby tyres, buy the reasonably slick ones because we will be using this bike on the roads most of the time...
The frame is stuck for some times, both in China and Malaysia.
Monday to go over to Bagan Dalam to get the frame
Finally ...
Crankset arrived this afternoon. no import duty.
Tektro Auriga Comp Delivered today 24-8-10.
No import duty.
All goods received according to order and specification? I believe you will tick off the items in the checklist(spreadsheet) as more of your orders start to come in? We hope to follow the progress of your BYOB (MTB) build up, so would appreciate your great effort in taking time to take photos of the parts as they arrive and updating the LATEST copy of the checklist. Thanks EC, so far so good !
Added in new column on the delivery date and specs status.
Novatec hub arrived this afternoon
Delivered through 4PX courier..so no need to go over to Bagan Dalam!!
EC,
I have added a title Howei MTB Chechlist to your latest spreadsheet where you have added an additional column. To avoid confusion we will from now quote this title in our blog and responses.
Can you also indicate if the items are purchased online or bought locally. Thanks.
For the benefit of the members can you show your final spreadsheet here in our GClub site. Add in the lead time too (from plaacing of orders to delivery of the parts).
When you start to assemble the bicycle, take some videos or photos and post them up here. I believe you would want to break the assembly processes into various stages?
Looks like the long overdue BYOB(Build Your Own Bicycle) MTB is at last taking shape ! Thanks EC
Week 1
22-8-10 - 28-8-10
29-8-10 - 4-9-10
5-9-10 - 11-9-10
12-9-10 - 18-9-10
19-9-10 - 25-9-10
26-9-10 - 2-10-10
3-10-10 - 9-10-10
7 week working schedule.
5-hr to spend on week 3,4,5,6, target 20-hr for the complete buildup .. err, novice job-la!
The bicycle frame is now with custom, pending further release.
I have the feeling that I need to get it at Bagan Dalam post office
Week3 Assembly schedule to move forward to Week 4.
I did assemble my MTB from old steel MTB frame. I had no problem to assemble all the parts by my own using a minimum tools. Just in an hours it can be completed. The most problem is to wait my parts to arrive after ordered it from international sellers. It always take about 3 and more weeks to arrive.
If you have time please come over to our place to join us the fun of BYOB..
as you see on the schedule, we will start the assembly on the 2nd week of september.
It's final price at $1095.55.
About 40% of parts will source from internet (where hard to get locally)
Cheap and big-size item (eg rim) will get from local to avoid paying unessasary high freight charges.
EC
I'm impressed. Well Done. So, you are satisfied ? Previously the budget was RM3k, so now it's very well within budget eh ?
Adrian
I will furhter nego to make 3k, hopefully.
It should be ok even if it runs over 3k. Your focus should now be on getting the rights parts and preparing to take some videos and/or photos of the assembly process so that we can post them up in our website here. This video and photo presentation needs to be planned, don't do it hapharzardly, please
Yesterday I tried assembling a few wheels and I realised that the biggest challenge lies in balancing the wheels. As for tools, I have a very basic set, which is not good enough. We should try to source a few more items before we start the actual assembly.
The day of reckoning will come when I will take the MTB for a round island test run ! I'm confident I will enjoy every bit of the ride !
At the end of the day we can take great pride of our BYOB MTB! (where all of us can share to use) And what counts most is the joy and the experience gained from this whole process of planning, sourcing, ordering and assembling the MTB !
Cheers and can't wait to ride Howei MTB !
I have gone over budget for 3k bike.
The total comes to $1082 = RM 3,570.
Maybe I will change to lower end fork for Suntour XCT V2 at $40. This could save me $100 to only $982.
All parts to be purchased online?
If so what about freight charges, duties and taxes?
It will be good if you can compile the final spreadsheet, from there hopefully we can visualise what sort of DIY MTB bike we will be getting for RM 3500..
It depends very much on "luck" upon parcel arrival at the custom centre (to see if needed to pay the duties).
Luck? No, we do not want to be caught pants down paying too much duty. It will be good if you can come out with the budget for worse case scenario that we pay 100% duty.
I will chk through again on the custom "bible" tomorow. If not mistaken it is 25% duty.
EC,
If possible add 2 columns "buy online" and "buy local"
All prices must be final landed cost including freight and duties. This will then allow us to compare the prices and decide if we should buy online or buy from local shops (if the parts are available) One more thing is LEAD TIME. This is crucial too. Last thing we want is to wait for parts to arrive in Decmeber 2010 !!

Haha, Don't lah be so concenred about brand, but the specs instead. Looks fine to me, from a spec perspective.
I drive a Toyota, used to think they make the best cars in the world in any price category. Look at that brand now. Total brand evaporation in every single category they make, from Toyota to Crown ( the Japanese emperor uses this car btw ), to Lexus.
And to add insult to my personal injury, I used to think Giant is only good for BMX, and over the course of this week of watching Tour De France, which I have not watched in years, I am comfortably surprised that their bodies are used by teams that are at the top of the game, so far.
Adchin,
Lapierre sounds French enough, ok pass!
Talking about Tour De france, yes, I saw that the Robobank team used the Giant TCR Advanced SL. Russian rider Denis Menchov and Robert Gesink of The Netherlands are their top riders. When the camera zoomed in on the Giant logo during the first few stages, I thought to myself, hey, we do not have strong enough riders to take part in the tour de france but at least Asia is represented by Giant and Fuji !
Cheers,
Dshee
ps: Tonight's ride of Contador Vs Schleck will be exciting !
One last thing. Is it possible to check to confirm the type of BB threading for the frame ? You actually don't want to end up with a frame that wants french threading. You only want French name frame.
Adchin, it's english thread.
Any good recommendation on the hub? It's really a challenge for me to avoid Shimano parts in the bicycle buildup..
I have the following: 1. saddle I can give you free ( no strings attached) 2. 1 pair of juicy 5 brakes (white color so maybe matching your frame but got a bit scratch) 3. x.9 rear deraileur still in good condition 4. x.7 shifters 5. cassette (9 speed but I dunno the teeth) 6. chain 7. truvativ crankset item 1. is free for you. others you can see and propose your budget. I not trying to make money. just saying to put it at home no use when I upgrade. give me your email if got interest
webster, I want to look on the items..I can't visualize in the wording (still learning on bicycle parts)
Webster, if no takers for the rear derailer and the crank, can I have a look at them ? What's the crank model like ? A triple ? Chain Ring Sizing ? As for the derailer, is it a long or short ?
I'm building a road bike and mixing and matching stuff everywhere. Feel free to email me your asking price for the items above at adchin@yahoo.com but only after everyone who are building confirms that they are not interested.
Thanks
Adrian
Adchin, can I go with you to look on the items? Let me know time and place.
EC
I have received notification from Webster on the type of bike it is. Here's what you do. You decide on the time and place. I am ok this Saturday morning.
You propose here, he replies, and we take it from there. You discuss with Webster to decide time and place because this is more of your needs than mine, as I am buying in all my components from eBay anyway and what he has on the list are the last of my needs, which are components of the Group.
Cheers
Adrian
Email both of you and webster. Time and place to finalise.
I am ok for this sat morning.
i didn't get email pun....
anyway, let's for saturday morning at Mc Donalds Sg Dua. 10.00am. ok or not?
want saddle or not?
if want i bring.
Good for me, but where exactly is the Mc Donalds ? Tesco X I know lah.
Pls bring saddle too since you dun want already mah. If EC dun want, I contra with you for very good coffee from my factory
Webster, time and place ok for me.
Adchin, further up Tesco X (about 300 M more..)
Thanks Webster and Adchin for your times on this morning meeting.
Adchin, I have much understanding now to the building process, and basically I just get my tools and fix it!!
EC

Yeah, it was a good outing for me.
Most probably I will go for the Lapierre frame. Now checking with DHL on reverse charge, as the customer officer keep on calling for me for special offer..I shall see how "special" DHL can offer..
Now I look on crankset, have shortlisted on 22-32-44 specs.
Chk internet and seeing FSA DynaDrive 175mm for $49.93+$23.99(freight). Not sure what's local pricing. But it can be nego on "make offer" button.. Unfortunately no BB inclusive.
