From town to queensbay
I have been taking this route from Pulau Tikus to Queensbay quite frequently, suddenly just had the urge to take a couple of photos to update gclub members...
Except for the open drain (see last photo) it's quite comfortable and safe now to ride to queensbay. Only problem still exist when riding back. Just coming off the cycle path after E-Gate I have to break the rules by cycling against the traffic using the motorcycle path. At times I had to cycle on the grass to avoid aggressive on coming motorbikes...
Previously was mud and gravel...
Nice tar road linking the old section opposite E-Gate all the way to Queensbay
Just after E-Gate on the right
Notice the open drain, its dangerous!! Cyclists need to keep your eyes on the path and try not to go too close the drain ! If there is on coming traffic, slow down should even stop. Something urgent needs to be done to this drain before an accident happens!

I tried this route this morning an my way back to Teluk Kumbar. Seem this route is safer than crawling the highway with other fast vehicle. All that you had described is true even a stall below pedestrian bridge also make that way as their own by putting tables and chairs for thier business. It takes plenty more time to use this route but it was a safe lane for cyclist. The authorities should give their attention to repair all the potholes and damaged part and make sure that this lane is maintained for the use as a walkway and for cyclist.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had a dedicated bike lane?!
dshee, could you not cycle on the same lane on your way back?
If MPPP could mark the above lane like many countries do, that would be great.

ps. Sorry, don't know how to paste photo. :(
Haha, if only we can get everyone to experience the joy of cycling in dedicated bicycle lanes then they all will be asking for dedicated bicycle lanes to be built in Penang !
Unfortunately Diana, it's not dedicated lanes to Queensbay, I am using the motorcycle lanes. It's the stretch before E-gate that I have to use these narrow motorcycle lanes. They are built next to the highway running parallel and thats why the traffic can be quite heavy at times. But after this stretch are the old concrete paths that wind along the coast. Except for the puddles when it rains and the danger of open drain, I can cycle from there all the way to Queensbay quite pleasantly...
However coming back is a different story. Using the same route, from Queensbay right up to close to E-gate it's not a not problem because there's hardly any traffic. But when it comes to the stretch of motorcycle lanes that I mentioned above, I will have to cycle against the sometimes crazy traffic of speeding motor bikes! The alternative is to get across to the other side of the highway by cycling up the steep pedestrain crossing near E-gate, carry my bike to avoid cycling on gravel and then cycle up the steep slope to E-gate. From there I can join the motorcycle lane back to town! but its a big and tiring loop ! Depending on my mood, I usually prefer to take risk cycling against the motorcyclist!
If you are keen to experience it, follow me one day, ok? Go shopping in Queensbay, what about that ?!
Cheers !
Dear Diana,
You can refer to this post regarding how to upload/paste photo in gclub websites.
I heard from Dr that the govt is building a cycle path from Queensbay to B Maung? If so the govt should also consider improving this stretch from town to Queensbay. Basically the infrasturcture is there, what is needed is a bit of improvment and we will have an uninterrupted cycle path all the way from town to B Maung !
