Good lubricants
Weeks ago I bought a Silicon based lubricant from a local hardware shop for my racer bike.
Before using the bike, I would normally spray the lubricant on the chain and gears and then lightling wipe them with a dry cloth; this was to prevent the oil from getting onto the rim of the wheel. But after using the bike for half and hour or so chain would start to squeek. I got fed up and switched to the cheap and simple WD40, thereafter absolutely no more squeeks !!

Can't agree more, I think the traditional lubricating oil is still the best. The viscosity of lubricanting oil is higher and therefore stays longer than say a WD40. It's just that I'm too lazy and find it more convenient to use a spray based lubricant ! Bb..zzz and go !
I use the used cooking oil. Never had a problem. Try it.
Yeah I heard about it too. Will it be water resistant??
Dear Turbosnail,
Oh yes. no problem with that. Cooking oil is very good indeed. it's good to use cooking oil. re use the used one ok. you don't have to use the new oil. after fried chicken, don't pour it away. re use it.
I am going to trying it out in my next oiling my bike chain. I read somewhere from one of the cycling mags that one of the problems I will face is it attracts ants easily!
Others may beg to differ. But I do find the old school 2T oil is the best chain lube for roadbikes. Just remember to rub it clean after you apply it. The oil will stay at the joints that needs the lube the most.
The chain of my bike was dry after a brief 40km ride from my recent 145km ride in KL. I found a used bottle of 2T oil at the Petronas gas station that had some oil left and decided to use it to lube my bike since no one brought any bicycle lube.
My chain remains lubed after that ride and the last ride in the rain with G Club.
