Penang - Bangkok - Laos - Lijiang - Shangri La (China)
On 4 wheel drives jeep??? On super bike in a convoy ???
No, one of us is seriously contemplating doing the above ride solo or with a partner unsupported by motorised vehicle. To make it more interesting he is planning a RACE not a "makan angin" tour where one has no time limit to reach the final destination. I am thrilled that this adventurous spirit still thrive in our young ones. I would very much would like to make this trip but I promise myself if this trip materialised I would probably wait for our good friend with my bicycle at Lijiang (Yunnan) and accompany him on his victorious ride to Shangri La a mere distance of about 150+ Km but at an altitude of about 3000 metres and traversing a few mountains across treacherous terrain.
It is still at a planning stage and the route from Penang via Thailand until Laos has been plotted out. The final part across Dali,Lijiang and home run to Shangri La is still been plotted......We believe this will be the first time this route is been try on a bicycle. We may consider contacting the Guiness Book of Record for this. (Please correct me if I am wrong here. Anyone there in the wide wide web??)
If any of you have any ideas, contributions or experience do please contribute. I know of our Webmaster Daniel Shee has gone through this path before albeit on hitch hiking on buses but so far his experience has proved invaluable.

I went to Lijang a few years ago and did a 3 day hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge.
I love Lijang. It's beautiful and has the best banana pancakes I've ever eaten!
All the best Ah Loon. Safe journey.
Talk to Ah Loon again. He seems all decided for this trip and the detailed China map certainly help in the planning for the China leg of the journey. If we were to meet up with him in Lijang, it would be great if we could be there couple of days earlier to aclimatize to the high altitude. As i was mentioning to a few enthusiastic cyclists this morning at PPearl Hill, we, so-so cyclists could get a support vehicle for ourselves from Lijang to Shangri La and if we feel not up to it we could always hoped into the van. So far we have 4 very interested cyclists. Hope more will come aboard. Lijang is marvelous esp if you were to tour on bike.
Should do a detour to Tiger Leaping gorge ! I took a mini bus so did not go the full length of the gorge. You will see much more by bike, like what Diana did...
Cycling to China. This is idea is been keep with me for very long time already. Recently is flash out from my mine again. So i decide make it come true. So i share this idea with Dr Lim n Daniel. They are very support me on this. At first i m decide to go to Xiamen. But then they suggest since i m going. why dun i go to some where else. For example like Shangri La. Is a gd idea also. so Shangri La. here i come... Since i decide my destination already. So guys. i need more information on cycling from Penang-Thailand-Laos-Shangri La. so any one hv any suggestion please come leave some commands here. Thank you.
hey ihad been there some way last year Oct , the view over there is good , the road clam up to shangalila is very nellow and many express buss passing thru is dengerous ! and half way is no accomodation , so you have to camp outside ? the wearthear is cool if windly even worse .
Foosan,
Did you go to Daocheng? From there you can go to Kanding and then Chengdu...
Tried to convince Ah Loon to cycle now but looks like it wont happen until next year. If he starts now he will be in Shangrila around Oct. Autumn in Shangrila is really fantastic scenaries !
We have created a small "live window" at the top right corner of the screen to monitor Ah Loon's progress, including his present planning of the trip.
There are 3 panels showing 3 consecutive days of actvities, with small icons denoting the Country
he is in, the Weather condition
and Activity
- what is he doing on that day. To view the full detail and photos sent by Ah Loon click on the panel title hyperlink.
We are still testing this new GClub site feature, so if you encounter problem browsing the window please send us your feedback. Or if the window suddenly dissapears from the screen, don't be alarmed, we may be doing some adjustments behind the screen..
Will update you as we continue to tweak the window... Cheeers!
Our full support Ah Loon!
In fact we have already started to program a "Live Window" to monitor and track your progress. Ask Dr to login to show you its at the top right corner (only Dr, myself and our programmers can see the window at this point. Once commissioned, all will be able to see this live window) I suggest we start the live window as soon as possible, even before you start the trip, so that we can learn how well you are gearing up for this historical event, is this ok with you kah?
I have the best China road map (equivalent to the London A-Z and Melway of Australia), will lend it to you when we meet up again.
The roads are good all the way to Shangrila, trust me. The only issue is the altitude and the cold when you are up at 4000m. From Lijang to Shangrila its a bit rough, that all. There are lots of interesting places to visit, like 'ni ren guo' and tiger leaping gorge. Well, I guess the difficulty of your ride depends on when you are going. I hope it's not during winter !
Below photo of the place I stayed in Shangrila. I hired a bicycle and cycled out to see how the tibetans live in small villages, I love it... Can you imagine the cold, it was only in Oct. I started with only T shirts but when I came back, I had like 1 wind cheater, 1 jacket and 2 wollen pullovers and some long johns.
Cheerful girls with rosy cheeks and colorful dresse; tibetans are friendly and live amzingly simple lives.
Cyling solo to Shangri-la? fantastic ! And it's so encouraging to hear that our young friend has such a desire to do such a long and forbidding trip! I hope this will stir more young hearts to follow his foot steps...
Yes, I did a solo backpacking trip couple of years ago. From Penang by train to Hualumpung, Bangkok and another train to Vientiane, Laos. Took mini buses to Luangprabang and then crossed the Laos/China border to JingHong, the capital of the exotic Xishuangbanna. Took an overnight bus to Kunming, stayed 2 nights to acclimatise and shopped for some warm clothing before heading west to Dali, Lijiang and then to Shangri la. Altitude sickness prevented me from going to Lhasa so I turned east to Daocheng, Kanding, ChengDu and back.
Travelling solo is quite a challenge in outback China. Sometimes when you have to squeeze into crowded and unsanitary toilets, with your heavy big backpack up at over 4000m, your peeing can be an excrutiating experience...
Want to see some photos??
Ah Loon has set the date 12th February, 2011 which is a Saturday corresponding to the 10th lunar day to launch his ride from Penang to Lijiang. The Penang Triathlon group and myself will be starting off with him from Penang to Hatdyai where we will stay the Saturday night and then come back with our chartered bus to Penang on Sunday. Our Bicycles will be packed into the bus. Ah Loon will then proceed on his own to Bangkok and his subsequent journey to Lijiang.
Hopefully on the last leg of his journey, we can have another victorious entourage to accompany him from Dali to Lijiang.
All are welcome to ride along with him from Penang to Hatdyai and subsequently from Dali to Lijiang but you have to inform us in advance as various logistic eg bus, accomodation has to be arranged and we have set a maximum number of riders to ensure safety. Oh, dont worry about the 243 Km ride to Hatdyai as the bus which will bring us back from Hatdyai to Penang will also act as support vehicle that you can hope on if you are too tired.
243km its close to breaking Maraza's 255km record ! How many can do this lah? Remember Ah loon will be pedaling his 'tank' not his usual racer bike, will he have enough leg muscles left to climb the mountains of Shangrila after that ??? Dr, you chaps are putting pressure on Ah Loon !
yes, photo please.
it's no way to carry big backpack to pass motion. last time i paid 30 yuan to leave my backpack at a special lounge at Zhuzou station, so only i could comfortably to evacuate!! ... the most expensive "toilet-fee" i paid up to date
Left Penang in early October 2007. It took me a month to do this quick "discvovery" trip.
Stayed in motels and cheap hotels. Interestingly in Dali I stayed in a guesthouse with many young backpackers from big Chinese cities. They shared out food cooked by volunteers and help out in cleaning up of the place. It was a bit like commune living. Rental per night in the dorm, RM10.
On the way to Daocheng from Shangrila our bus was searched by the police and taken to army barrack for 100% search ! A young girl was caught with 1 kg of opium hidden in her lagguage. Police whipped the 3 accomplices with pistols, dragged them from the bus. Really frightening experience !
After going thru some treacherous mountain tracks, we ended up mid night in Daocheng, greeted by the beautiful snow.
Our champion Ah Lun wants to cycle to Shangri-la? Definitely doable. Perhaps should even consider Lhasa...
If he decides go, we will monitor him LIVE here in our GClub site ! We will feature him in a special window right at the top of the page! Do it Ah Lun !!
looking at those mountain ranges reminds me of my cycling journey from Beijing to the gGreat Wall where there is a lot of mountains to climb but I think this one esp after Lijiang will be a lot tougher. Altitude sickness (hypoxia syndrome ) is very real at this height of about 3000 m to 4000 metres above sea level almost as high as Mt Kinabalu the highest mountain in SEA. i remember climbing Kinabalu as we were reaching the Low's peak, after a few steps climbigng, I need to rest because of the low oxygen content. So I supposed from Dali onwards, Ah loon may need to ride slow and steady, maybe a daily small kilometres for the first few weeks to acclimatise.
To monitor his progress on this site I suppose some kind of contact email etc must be established. Anyone out there with experience cycling in this area are welcome to contribute ideas
Well initially Ah Loon is looking at Penang - Xiamen but guess this route has no more glamour. Now he thinking of Shangri La and you want him to consider Lhasa. I think Lhasa is too far fetch. Heard that if you take the train to Lhasa at certain stage you need to use oxygen Mask. How to cycle like that
