I was inspired by Michael during my maiden ride with the gang. Going almost round island and then up the off road track from Balik Pulau to Hilton and then back to Tg Bunga. After that I told myself I better get in shape.
Hi Tony. You have more time to do your training now. All you need to do is to train on interval rides up hill. You can have rests in between. When u reach the top, u can have your rest and drink. Then you roll down to the start and ride up again when you are ready. Take your time as you do not want to strain yourself. Record your distance of the hill climb, the speed taken, and how long do you take to go up that hill.
I did my hill rides at Pearl Hill. Last Thursday morning I rode up the 1.8km hill. 1st lap took me 11mins, 2nd was 12min and 3rd was 11min. Average speed was 10km/h. Fastest speed was 14km/h and slowest was 8km/h. You can record some thing like mine.
Can I suggest that you ride to Sg Pinang temple, just before the climb starts, as warm up. Rest there for a while and hydrate yourself proper. You will not want to have to much water in your tummy while you climb the hill. just wet your mouth will do. Start your climb, at your own pace, and ride up to Laksa House. Rest there and wet your mouth. It is about 1.2km ride up the hill, quite easy for me on road bike. Pearl Hill is worse than this. Try to do two sets of the climb. If you think you are ready for the 3rd, go ahead. But please remember the rul of thumb, go on your own pace! That's it for the training. Rest the next day and do it again the following day. I believe you will improve on your endurance.
Hi Peter, Thanks for suggesting the Sg Pinang>Laksa House climb. Never thought of using that stretch for practise climb. Usually I do cycle up to Sg Pinang or P Acheh for bfast. But I don't always continue on to T Kerawang. Most of the time I'm just too plain lazy. But when I do, it's only 1 climb to and fro; or one way all the way to T Bahang/B Ferringhi/Tg Bungah/Tg Tokong/Gurney Drive and then hitch a ride back in my wife's car. Haha!
The strange thing is there were some times where I do this stretch of climb easily. Once I did it with my front big gear! There are times where I have to struggle and there are times when I just want to give up halfway. I'm doing better now and most of the times I do reach Laksa House in one climb. But it is my habit to always stop there for a minute or two to take a drink before continuing upwards. And last Fri, I continued on with Daniel to B Ferringhi but I think he was going at a very slow pace to encourage me.
Okay, if following your above advice can improve my endurance I'm going to start doing it this evening. Haha!
See that you are planning to ride round island again this Sunday. What time are you starting? Following the KWYP route? That means from T Kumbar you'll have to cycle straight on to B Pulau town before looping back via Pondok Upeh and come out at KKTM junction, then go across the road and up to P Betong mosque for the turnaround back along Jln Bahru. If you don't intend to go too fast I can ride with you from Bkt Genting and maybe follow you until Titi Kerawang. Too lazy to cycle back from T Bahang dam. Let me know.

I'm actually very happy you completed the ride. Was a bit worried when you had the cramps. Also, remember to check your bike properly before you ride. Somtimes the siimplest overlook can cause injuries as well.
I went back home and told my wife about you and Mike riding with us round island and she was so impressed. Made her think of her physical condition in terms of her activity. Trying to brainwash her into cycling la
Thank you all for your patience for bearing with Michael and I (actually it was just me, Michael can ride alot faster) especially Captain, Robert, Peter,Webster and everyone who kept an eye on us. Also, to Captain, thanks for fixing my cramps and Jason and others (sorry was in too much pain to see who) for fixing my bike.
It was my first Round Island and when Captain said it was going to be a slow one, I don't think he meant that slow!
Anyway, it was a good ride and didn't turn out to be as bad as I thought. Good group to ride with.
Sorry I didn't get round to saying hi to you and Michael when you reached Bkt Genting. It's great that you completed the round island ride. To tell you the truth, I have yet to attempt the full round island ride in one go. So you are one up on me.
Will look forward to riding with you and Michael and the rest of the gang again when you attempt your next RIR. As I am also slow, perhaps we can encourage each other to go faster. Haha!
How did we miss meeting you at Bkt Genting? Did you join the first group of riders who had sped off? If so, I don't blame you. I don't think you would have been as slow as I was! Any slower and you would be dead. Hahaha!
I was waiting for the group at Bkt Genting, having cycled up from Balik Pulau. Was there at around 8.30 am so waited a full hour and a quarter for you guys. We waited until you and Michael, and Captain, arrived. I was talking to Captain when the main group started off so we went after them..
Slow or fast does not matter. What is important is that you completed the route. As I said, I have not done the complete round island ride in one go before. You have inspired me. So please make sure you let me know when you plan to go for your next ride. I want to try my first RIR too.

If Mike can do it, anyone can!
I can't, Jason........... maybe you can be my mentor. I see hills, I collapse and die. Hey Peter, help too.
