Took only a few bottles of drinks and some lunch bars, we started off 5am from Penang and had yum cha in Ipoh before setting off our ride up the new highway via Simpang Pulai to Cameron Highlands.
The climb wasn't that steep but it was like never ending climb ! We ran out of drinks and food and had to fill our bottles from the stream. Fortunately non of us suffered from any poisoning.
The climb was quite an experience for all of us. There was no food stalls until Garden View which was almost at the top. And with mad drivers racing up and down the highway, you have to keep watching your back.
Gerald took his foldie, probably the first Penangite to climb Cameron Highlands with a foldie! I took my tour bike, with my newly purchased pannier bags at the rear. Wusolow rode his all steel MTB converted to tour bike and Susumu rode his faithful iron horse.
Conclusion: Tough for a day trip. Probably Ah Loon should try this before his Shangrila trip !
mind sharing how long did it take to reach the restaurant up there? trying to gauge is it possible to do it within 5hours. Fyi, there is a race up cameron from simpang pulai on 10th Oct 2010 organize by United Cyclist of Ipoh.
It took us more than 5 hours but remember we were riding foldie and tour bikes and looking for water mid way!
The total distance covered was over 112 km.
I would advice staying a night in Ipoh so that you can have enough sleep the night before. Carry at least 2 bottles of saline drink and some lunch bars. If you have a racer, use it.
The nice thing is it's cool up there ! Roads are good but harzardous due to speeding cars and trucks !

LOL... first time seeing salt with coffee or even poured straight into the mouth! Sure must be very dehydrating ride. Careful though... although salt is good for hydration but if you do not get enough water, you'll end up in more trouble than what you started with...
We were ill prepared for this trip.

But the ride really looks extremely nice.
Yes in desperation! No 100plus so either swallow some salt or add to whatever you're drinking ! haha!
