CFAL 3rd EDITION, 11 Sept 2011

CFAL 3rd Edition 2011 - Thank You

The G Club Penang Cyclists would like to express its gratitude to all participants, helpers, volunteers and sponsors not to mention the PDRM & MPPP in making this event a success.

Despite the prolong downpour, we were pleased to record an attendance of more than 2500 cyclists who braved the rain to cycle along.

We did have fun organising the event although all of us miss riding with you because we have to "man the shop"  to ensure everything goes smoothly and we hope you too have a swell time.

Once again, thank you for coming.

Collection of goodies bag for those registered with CCI bicycle shop at Carnavon Road in Penang, please collect it at G Hotel on saturday from 10 am to 7 pm. Sorry guys for the inconvenience. G CLUB SECRETARIAT

7th Sept, 2011

The countdown starts !!

After our press conference, we are delighted to report that the PDRM will be sending 20 outriders to maintain traffic and ensuring the cyclists safety during the event. Nevertheless, the onus is on all of us to be careful and obey all traffic rules and follow the instructions of the traffic police on duty.

WE would also like to advise all participants that the first 10 Km i.e from the starting point at Padang Kota to Jelutong Expressway (at the E gate complex), the pace will be controlled at 35 to 40 Kph. The lead car which is the police radio car will be setting the pace. Please do not overtake the lead car for your own safety. This is because from the Padang Kota (Esplanade) to the Jelutong Expressway, they are a lot of traffic lights and junctions. The police outriders will stop all motorised vehicles to ensure all of you have smooth and uninterrupted ride all the way to the Expressway before letting the pelotons to breakaway at your own speed !!! Please do take care as the control speed with means 3086 cyclists will be jostling for space and the danger of group crashes is very real. Hence, be patient and considerate to your fellow cyclists.

From our recce ride 2 weeks ago, we would like to point out that the roads are generally well maintain except when you are reaching Batu Maung and Bukit Genting area where there are some construction going on and the metal strips concrete roads near GEnting is still there, so ensure your tyres are adequately pumped at the right pressure to prevent pinch punctures. After the Genting climb you will be rewarded with a beautiful stretch of newly completed downhill 2 lanes road but beware when you reached the end of this stretch it narrows down to 1 lane, Keep your distance from the cyclist in front of you.

FROM THE G CLUB SECRETARIAT

6th, Sept, 2011

It is only 5 days to D DAy and all systems ready to go. 3086 goodies bags sorted out this weekend and tonight. You will wondering why we are doing it when we could the latest blockbuster on HBO !! And here I am still updating newsletter at 130 am!! We hope everyone will have a good safe ride.

Please be punctuate and be at the Padang Kota from 615 am. You will not be bored. The Chung Ling brass band will be parading and entertaining. 20 strong police outriders will be accompanying us to ensure safety and 70 members St John Ambulance and radio Signal Corp will be on duty not to mentioned 70 girl guides who will be helping out as well. This year we are lucky to have a large number of CIMB BANK personnels volunteering to help out at the Esplanade and water stations.

There will be 3 water stations ie Tlk Kumbar, Sg Rusa and Batu Ferringhi. Dear cyclists, please do not waste the bottled water. It is meant for drinking and not for washing your face or feet !!! Last year there some inconsiderate cyclists who used it other then to drink.

For the Penang cyclists who have registered with their bicycle shops please call up the shops on Wednesday before you go to ensure your stuff is there and for the rest who registered online pls collect your goodies bag at G HOtel from 8 am to 7 pm. You can ask your friends to collect for you but ensure that he has you receipts.

3rd September, 2011

It is only one week to the event and all systems ready on the organisers side. We were amazed at the amount of logistics that were needed to be sorted out right from the briefing of the volunteers before the start of the event right up to the closing entertainments.

All participants are to assemble at the Padang Kota by 630 am on th 11/9/11 after which it will be quite difficult for you to get to the starting point as all the roads leading to it will be closed. From 615 am, the Chung Ling School, 40 strong brass band will be entertaining before the flag off at 7 am sharp. This year the Chief Minister YAB Lim Guan Eng will be cycling with us for a short distance before he has to take off to the airport.

Powerbar has increase their lucky draw offer to 20 instead of 10. Thanks to our hard working Charmain who has appeal to them to increase the number.

Sunplay a sun protecting cream will be sponsoring 3100 bottles for all participants. It will be in your goodies bag. I have personally used it during the Century Ride recently and I can vouch that it does blocked the sun. So apply your sunplay on the morning of the ride to avoid sunburn. It is produced by the company called Mentholatum and their website is at http://www.mentholatum.com.my/companyinfo/comp.html

SLN <!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --> Heavy Duty Degreaser is also chipping in, in this event It is formulated as the ultimate answer to tough dirt, grime and grease remover. 2th July, 2011

8 more days to the closing and registration is approaching 2500 and we have to consider closing the registration soon even though we are prepared for 3000 participants.

KT CYCLONE is chipping in the sponsorships with 5 MVR helmets costing about RM 100 each.

We are very thankful this year that the support from the bicycle shops in Penang are marvelous and the generosities of our sponsors are beyond words. We have so many bicycles both from Giant & Le Run, Bike Carriers from Thule via its local agent CT Audio, sunblocks from sunplay, Isotonic drinks from Suntonic and many more  which we will lists down soon and sent to all participants in appreciation of their kindness.

You will be wondering what is the Prince of Wales Island International School sponsoring. This school is part of MTT group, the developer for BOTANICAL CT a comprehensive housing project at Balik Pulau. They have manned the Balik Pulau water station with great compliments from participants last year and we are so grateful that they have agreed to participate again this year.

Lone Pine Hotel which is part of the E&O group has also verbally agreed to sponsor the Batu Ferringhi water station. So after a tedious climb up the Balik Pulau Hill you can look forward to some rewarding cold drinks.

Come this 11th September, most of the G Club committees will be riding along with all of you. For this year we are hosting the fun ride one week later i.e 18th, September and it will be a fun raising event for the ST NICHOLAS HOME OF THE BLIND. This is to allow us to concentrate on the main ROUND ISLAND RIDE hence ensuring more pleasurable ride for all.

The St Nicholas Ride for Sight's main sponsor will also be the CIMB FOUNDATION. It will be held at Balik Pulau and it will a fun less than 20 Km ride tailored for families and young children (Please no children on training wheels !! We had nightmares looking out for these very young kids zipping harzadously along the busy Burmah road). The terrain will be Kampong road cycling along padi fields and swampy canals. It will be both entertaining and educational esp for the city slickers and you will amaze on the other Kampong side of Penang island.

25th June, 2011

15 days more to closing and a tally of 2046 confirmed participants, we are running on the last leg of our registration before the actual work starts for the majority of the committees i.e matching the jerseys sizes to each participants ( a tedious job made easy by our website sponsors Caritech and HOWEI). 24th May, 2011

Concluded our 10th meeting and it is the best in a sense. Just received an SMS from Giant Bicycle in the midst of our meeting confirming their generosity in sponsoring the major part of the CFAL 3rd edition 3 top grand prizes; The 1st grand prize will be a GIANT high end road bike valued at least  Rm 15,000, 2nd prize will be another road bike at about Rm 6,000 and 3rd prize another bicycle at Rm 3,000. Please look out at this website for the confirmation of the models and the photos of these bicycles once it is available. This is so unbelievable that we have to call GIANT main dealer straight away for confirmation and permission to publish it in this website and send it off as a newsletter to all cyclists. SO IF YOU HAVE ALWAYS DREAM OF A HIGH END GIANT BICYCLE, THIS IS YOUR CHANCE FOR A LUCKY GRAND PRIZE ON THE 11th, September, 2011.

Our usual sponsor, Suntonic will also be on hand to replenish our dehydrated body with their specially formulated isotonic drinks and we hope to secured the versatile Suntonic yellow bottle that comes along with the GIANT goodies bag as in the last event.

We have also finalized the medal which will be as published in the previous update and it is designed in very unique way in the form of a bicycle crank in pewter for the very reason that many of us avid riders and sportsmen/women may have a whole bunch of medals and we hope this one will stand out as a unique achievement in your round island endeavor.

A sun block company “SUNPLAY – From Japan” wills a very high SPF of 100+ will be giving us 3000 sachets to be included in your goodies bag. I have used it recently and to my surprise it works very well in protecting your skin.

We have also received news from CYCLING MALAYSIA who will be sponsoring 10 free annual subscriptions for the lucky draw. Not forgetting Power Bar is also coming aboard with hampers for the lucky draws.

As the event is CAMPAIGNING FOR A LANE, our main sponsor CIMB FOUNDATION has already issued us a grant and with the permission of the STATE GOVERNMENT, we hope to complete the 3rd phase of the bicycle signposts from Pulau Betong to Queensbay area. Despite some pessimisms from a small group of naysayers, we hope for whatever its worth, these signposts will help to create some awareness on road sharing. BE PERSISTENT & PATIENT and hopefully a lane will be granted soon……………………Lao Tzu;” It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop”

18th May, 2011

We finally have a sample of the medal in the form of a bicycle crank. It looks good but to hold it feel better as it is made from pewter ;

This medal is made from 3 parts which are then pressed together to give it an authentic miniature crank feel. I am sure participants in the event will treasure this one of its kind medal and hopefully everyone will strive to finished the 80Km round island route. As in last year, MTT BOTANICAL CT will be sponsoring a water station at Balik Pulau. Suntonic has also pledge to support in providing isotonic drink. The event jersey for this year will be from micromesh and the design is pleasant in light blue in line with CIMB FOUNDATION corporate colours.

We are in the process of securing a super grand prize worth at least 10k road bike and we hope this will encourage. Hope to finalise this in one to two weeks time

21st April, 2011

The finishers' medal which you will receive upon completion of your 80 Km, shall be a unique one of its kind, in the form of a bicycle crank. We have managed to get a few medal makers who have confirmed that it is doable. It is quite intricate and we were initially worried it may be technically difficult to do. A preview of the Medal will be as below (pls note that the actual medal may differ);

For the grand prize we are also discussing with some bicycle companies. We hope to get a really grand prize for the top lucky draw. Trying very hard to have a 10k plus bicycle from the sponsor. Hopefully we will succed in securing it. We have also agreed to have a buffet style lunch with 4 r 5 dishes and rice for the lunch after the event.

In view of the medal which cost quite a bit, the registration for the event will be slightly more i.e at RM 70. This go into making the jersey, medal mainly.

Following our press conference on the 19th April, registration form will be available in all 11 bicycle shops in Penang and for those outstations, you can registered on line starting about 12 noon tomorrow (Friday) at this website. Pls register early as places are limited.

14th April, 2011

Following a series of 5 meetings, the G Club CFAL 3rd Edition organising committees have agreed and come out with a few decisions. We have decided to have only one event i.e the 80 Km Penang Round Island Ride. They will not be any more fun ride. The date of the event shall be 11-9-11. A press conference will be held at G Hotel on the 19/4/11 i.e this Tuesday and the date for registration through the bicycle shops as well as online registration (pls look up this website on 25/4/11) will be 25/4/11. We hope to close the registration 2 months before the event i.e on 11/7/11. This is to facilitate logistic organisation. We hope all participants will be able to give us their exact jersey size and we will have time to match it with the vendors.

This is the event jersey for the 3rd Edition. Credit should be given to our limkokwing graduate Eng Cheong who has designed this beautifully "cogwheel" jersey in CIMB FOUNDATION colour theme.

We have also decided to give a nice finishers' medal to those who finished the ride and come back to Padang Kota within the stipulate time. Please look up this website for the design of the medal. PLS CHECK LATEST UPDATE FOR CFAL 3RD EDITION

Got some friends from Sabah wanting to join the event.

Where can I rent some bikes for them? Either a hardtail or a road bike?

In the past 2 years have anyone ride a 6 speed foldies for such an event? How long does it take for them to complete?

Appreciate assistance here.

Thanks.

Rouven

Rouven, i know KSH got a few bikes for rent. MTB hardtail. you can also try Chin Aik as well. I think most of the bike shops got some 'spares', but i do not know if they do rental or not.

As for 6 speed foldie, i think you can complete round island quite easily. should not be a problem.

cheers

Whao, a high end GIANT with SRAM force groupset for luck draw !!  Hey DR, ask for SRAM RED set instead of Force lah !  How much is this composite bike worth?  The SRAM groupset is worth about 3k

Daniel, FORCE is good enough and the price of this bicycle is VALUELESS because only 100 of this is produce to commemorate the 100 years of Taiwan formation and it has a number 42 and a CFAL 3rd edition plaque on it.

Please have a look at the 2nd and the 3rd prizes which is equally impressive !!
