8th NOVEMBER, 2009. 9 PM
Today was our 2nd Sunday Tlk Bahang monthly ride. There 2 records breaking events; i) for the first time we have escorted ride by 4 RELAs. ii) We hv a record breaking number of riders, starting of with abt 20 at G hotel and with riders joining along the way, it swelled to almost 40.
From the rough survey from riders today, everyone felt a lot safer with the RELA s around. To our pleasant surprise they were actually manning the traffic lights and intersections and stopping cars to allow our safe passage. We felt we were VIPS !!! Anyway I was more worried that the REAL traffic police will showed up and reprimand them but they seems quite comfortable in their job. We would certainly be using their services for all G CLUB organised bicycle events as our motto is to ensure safety in bicycling. WE would like to make every ride a miniature version of our CAMPAIGN FOR A LANE event on 25/10/09 in terms of safety.
We hope that our next month Tlk Bahang ride on the 2nd Sunday will see an even bigger number of riders. Again the G club are not trying to gain popularity by getting a big crowd but more of to send a statement to the authority that we hv the numbers and we cyclists need space to ride. The road shoud be shared with the cyclists.
SEE ALL OF U NEXT MONTH. PLS FEEL FREE TO POST COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS.
The post mortem meeting last night was uneventful. Almost all attended concurred with our poll in which 155 participated ;83% think it is well organised, 14% think can do, the rest not really or no opinion.
The important issue that we discussed is should the event be continued next year, I strongly felt we should as our target for bicycle lanes ,although the pilot project from Gurney Drive To Tlk Bahang and the Heritage Enclave has been achieved, the broader picture i.e the Great Penang Trail to loop up bicycle route around Penang Island as envisaged in YB Sim Tze Tzin proposal is still very far off. We could as in this year with prudent spending and getting the best quotations for our t shirt etc, participants can still have quality t shirts and jerseys and at the same time we still have lots of surplus funds which we intend to use it for the bicycle emblems. It will be interesting to see the result of the poll on this issue.
Our monthly G hotel to Tlk Bahang ride will be an escorted ride in future i.e we will have 4 outriders in the form of RELA s members one in front, one at the back and 2 on the sides to marshall the convoy. We felt this is esp helpful for first timers who will feel intimidated by the traffic. Pending approval from the traffic police we may even get the front and back RELA members to be in cars to ensure safety of the riders. This is an interesting proposal and thinking out of the box and let see how it unfold!!!
Message by Chairman Dr Lim 29th OCTOBER, 2009, 10 pm
With the conclusion of the Campaign for a Lane which seems to be overshadowed by Ride With the CM, the G club is looking forward to a joint post mortem meeting with the Rotary Club Of Tg Bungah on the 3rd of November, 2009. We welcome any suggestions, comments and complaints from the participants, sponsors and anyone that cares so that we could discuss it during the meeting.
On the whole, we felt that the riders had an enjoyable and safe ride. We were also very please with the strong support from the state government in particular our Chief Minister for so sportingly riding the whole 12 KM.
The next task for the G club Penang Cyclists and the Rotary Club of Tanjong Bungah is to implement the bicycle emblems and signage from Gurney Drive to Tlk Bahang and back as well as the Heritage Enclaves. We were very disappointed that somehow the budgeting done by the state subcommittee for the bicycling lane has only allowed us to place emblems every 500 metres which is as good as not doing it. We are in the midst of trying to reallocate budgets and hopefully with some luck we could fulfilled our initial plan to have the emblems every 250 metres.

Hi G'day,
Kudos to G Club for the successful event and the public awareness achieved through the CM Ride. Hopefully, our CM Lim got the message that Penang cyclists are serious and we need the road users to "Share The Road" with us. We look forward to having the cycling lane and road signs that G Club has been campaigning for in a very near future.
Let's make cycling part of our life style. Ride Safe, Live Strong !
Cheers
What a wonderful morning for all of us who took part in the Round Island ride! Thank you to G Club and Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah for splendid organisation. Thank you for the complimentary ride which I completed and collected my finisher jersey! It was my first time riding such a distance of 80km at one go. The organisation overall was superb from collecting the ride number and t-shirt up to the end collection of food and drinks. The water stations were well manned, RELA team offered good traffic control and direction, the medical team on stand by gave confidence to those who needed attention. Syabas! Many thanks to all who have made this Campaign such a huge success. We hope to see more bicycle lanes and signs in the very near future!! Thanks Aikky and RC Tg Bungah for the comlimentary ride, from your appreciative fellow Rotarian!
First of all, I would like to congratulate the people who made this Ride with CM such a huge success!
The jersey of my choice (M) turned out to be quite small, I was wondering whether anyone out there want to swap their L size jersey with mine.
Also, my picture did not appear in the picture gallery... I was wearing an AG2R jersey during the round island ride. Perhaps I wasnt looking in the right picture gallery but my assumption is that there were too many pictures to be posted on the site. I hope somebody could point me in the right direction as to where the remaining pictures are or maybe provide me with the cameraman's contact number.
