Press Conference at G Hotel as reported by local newspaper

WHEN I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.
That saying by well known English writer H.G. Wells sums up the feeling of the G-Club Penang Cyclists, a recreational group of cyclists who are the latest to join the push for bicycle lanes in Penang.
Group representative Dr Lim Seh Guan said three feet of existing roads was all that was needed for a designated bicycle lane.
“A bicycle lane is very economical as it is painted on the existing road, compared with a bicycle path which has to be built separate from the road,“ he said.
“The lane is just a designated area on the road reserved for cyclists.
“If we have enough money, we can also paint the whole lane a different colour, like in other countries, so it will stand out more,“ Dr Lim said at a recent press conference.
Dr Lim said the best place in Penang to start off the bicycle lane was from Gurney Drive to Teluk Bahang.
“This can be used as a pilot route as a lot of the roads there are quite wide and less busy than the town roads.
“Aside from that, there is already an existing group of cyclists who use these roads, especially for exercise on Sunday mornings,“ he added.
He said cyclists travelling around Penang now faced serious risks such as being involved in accidents with motorists.
“Currently, the public have a poor concept of road-sharing with cyclists.
“Some say there isn‘t even enough space for motorcycles, now cyclists want a lane too!
“The truth is, cyclists have the right to use the road as much as anyone else and we feel a bicycle lane will go far in creating civic consciousness and acknowledging the cyclists‘ right to share the road,“ Dr Lim said.
