Cyclists must not be a nuisance to motorists...
Hi G'day,
Having a Rela escorted group ride is indeed a very constructive way to promote safe cycling. However, we should also remember that cyclists are NOT "VIP" and are definitely not exempted from the traffic rules. We have to STOP if the RED light is ON. Even the Pro in Europe stops at RED light during training. In group riding, always cycle in single file.
While we seek others to "Share The Road" with us, we should not cause any nuisance to others.

Thanks SK for inititating this interesting discussion. This is what an active site shud be having.
Even in state sanctioned events like the RIDE WITH CM, the RELA s have no authority to stop traffics esp at traffic light when the light is green what more in a monthlly outing for an obscure little G CLUB!!. At the Tg Bungah traffic light which is a main one, I actually told them just to coordinate the ride i.e to stop the cyclists when traffic is red and move on when its green. So all these Main Main traffic police game stops from there!!
BTW, Robert has also confirmed with the traffice ASP on the legality of the RELA s escorting us because at the back of our minds we felt it is probably not right for them to act as outriders too. Apparently the ASP has confirmed it is ok. We will ride on with their comfort as long as the motorists do not complain. So you guys are right, don t be a nuisance on the road and make people complain and there goes our RELA.
I discussed this with El Kapitan after the ride.
Yup, we should follow the traffic rule even with escort. No exception!
This is why we need a dedicated cycle lane and this is why I'm supporting G-club. In UK, we have a dedicated cycle path which is encourage more cyclist and promoting Green Environment. Why do the cyclist need to ride on the dangerous road if they have a dedicated cycle path.
Do you know why there are so many cyclist in France? In france, If any motorist go near to any cyclist less than about 24 inch from the side, you will get a "saman" and your driving point will get deducted. If any motorist hit the cyclist and the motorist is wrong, he/she driving license will get "Gantung". I hope that Penang or Malaysia goverment will have this type of ruling. If Malaysian Goverment can implement this law and enforce it, I think the motorist will be more careful when they see any cyclist. I'm not condemning the malaysian driver, they just need to change their mindset towards cyclist.
One more think, may I know how many drivers stop or drive to the side if they hear any siren from the ambulans? I think Malaysian have a long long way to go...
Note: I'm not a foreigner nor an activist. I'm just an ordinary Penang Kia who love cycling.
Best Regards, Ray
well said. =)
Yes, true. Unless its a special event like Ride With CM, we should not expect RELA to stop for us at every traffic intersections. If RELA stops the traffic for us to pass at every red light (and I doubt this is even legal) soon motorists will be pissed off and the repercussions can be bad for cyclists !
