Cheers to everyone!
I recently started cycling again after a long lapse, can say a bit lazy. Anyway I did my first long distance trip (it is to me) on 1st November 2009 from my home in Tg Bungah to Tg Dawai via Pantai Merdeka (Actually cheat a whee bit by taking boat with bike from Pantai Merdeka across to Tg Dawai. You see, one not only have to ride hard but ride smart too! Hahaha...only joking) You can follow me my at http://the-lone-cyclist.blogspot.com or search for my trails at http://www.everytrail.com
My second trip was to Archaeology Museum of Lembah Bujang, Merbok, Kedah was on 7th November 2009.
Hope to join you guys one day. I'm a slow rider lahh, so a bit 'phai seh' always traiing behind.
Cheers!

Hi Ray,
Hey, no problem, just say the word 'Go'. Would like to get a racer someday.....maybe.
During my ride at times, racers overtake me effortlessly while I pedalled furiously to keep up....but cannot even 'smell the smoke' ( bay be ean )...hehe!!
So you going to Pendang, best of luck and most important have fun. Winning is not the most important thing. I know, nobody like to loose... right? But in our pursuit of trying to win, we sometimes forget about the fun part. Complete the race, if cannot win come back again next time. No offence lah I not saying you musn't win..
I learn a lot of things when riding alone. Patience is one of them. Initially I try to get to my destination as fast as possible, as if somebody is waiting to give me a prize for that. Upon reaching I hurriedly cycle home. Then I thought to myself "Hey, what is this all about? Where is the fun part?" Just like work, rush here, rush there to get the job done.
Secondly I learn to take extra care when I'm on the road. There is no buddy, Rela escort (Sorry Captain, no offence) to watchout for me. I'm sharing the road with all the big trucks, traillers and crazy car drivers most of the time. That is why I stopped for some time during my last trip. It was raining heavily and still cars were speeding down the road like nobody business. With poor road visibility and my small fooprint, I have to get out of their way. I want to come home and complete my blog, not end up in hospital or worst end up in a box. I take calculated risk when I'm on the road. I have to consider the distance and save enough energy to cycle home. If I make a mistake who do I turn to for help?
I leave alone in Penang and nobody knows where I'm going other than my postings on my blog. So if a trailer or car decides to 'buy' me, then that it. I become part of the statistics.
Every ride is a learning experience. You learn what and what not to do and not forgetting what and what not to bring..haha
Coming back to the Pendang race, gain the experience of every race you encounter. Analyse and learn from the experience and mistakes.... oops! I should rephrase that with 'not so right things you did back there' then you'll become a better rider in future. I believe this is your first race, don't lah rush and try to win them all.
Yeah, I think I said too much already.
Best of luck again.
Best regards,
wusolow
wusolow's points are cogent and noted for years. once articulated, it does mirror my thoughts exactly re: nutter drivers, bossy lorries, crazed kupchai's, and yes, whenever i complete a ride, i'm happy i'm not in a box! Live to ride another day. just remember to leave word with a friend that you plan to do a ride where to where, and when to when, approximate time expected home, and if you somehow don't show up, for them to call the police to report you as missing. No man is an island, just remember that.
Thank you very much Fudge!
I remembered the title of a book by James Minchin written about Elder Lee Kuan Yew called 'No man is an island'.
I have been living alone for some time now and slowly turning into a hermit. I have become self-reliant and independent. Most of the time I do things alone. But thanks to G Club, I don't have to ride alone these days. Hmm...maybe I should change my blog name to ' not too lonely cyclist' hahaha...
I'll take heed of your kind advice in future.
Thanks once again.
Best regards,
wusolow
Dear wusolow,
I will always remember this phrase "Winning is not everything, Having Fun is everything". I'm have not been cycling for at least 10 years and just started cycling 4 week before "Campaign for a Lane". This is my first MTB Jamboree, I would like to push myself a little bit and see how it goes. If you have any rides on saturday, please let me know....
No Pain No Gain, Ray
Dear Ray,
How about next Saturday 28th Nov. 2009. We do a recce of Kuala Muda area? Should be fun. I wonder if Melissa likes to join us? Meet in front of Island Plaza at 6.20am. This should give us some time to catch the 7.00am ferry. Melissa, if you are reading this and like to come along, meet us at the jetty by 6.50am. If you're late then it'll be the sampan instead of the ferry for you....no lah only joking! Breakfast at roti canai stall in Teluk Air Tawar. If I do recall, this stall serve quite good roti canai. Till today, it still draws a huge crowd. I guess the quality is still the same. Didn't get a chance to try it when riding by recently due to time constrain.
Best regards,
wusolow
Guys,
Really sorry, can't join you all lah for this trip although I would really love to.... Need to go back hometown... grandparents need to see their granddaughter... Why lah always bad timing one... Enjoy your roti canai and TT ( i'm sure it's tasty )... and don't forget to take photos of your trip and post 'em up for us to view. Thanks for the invitation.
Rgds,
Melissa
Dear Melissa,
I's ok we just doing a recce only. We're going to submit a proposal to Captain to make this a G Club's inaugural 'overseas' monthly ride. Hmm...nice sound to it don't you think. That again depends on the comittee's approval.
But looks like we can't have roti canai due to Hari Haji. Stall maynot be operating.
Don't worry we'll take plenty of photos of our trip including all the delicious food along Jalan Raja Uda ( sorry to make you 'lau nua' a bit) haha...
Anyway where's your 'kampung' if I may ask?
Best regards,
wusolow
Yeah, I second your suggestion to make it a monthly ride. Add some variety to the monthly Tlk Bahang ride... My kampung ( parents' house ) is Ipoh ... but I not Ipoh 'lang' lah...
Ai, suffering from relapse of my cold and coughing from 2 weeks back now. Hopefully tomorrow morning I won't get fever and have to miss the Pendang Jamboree....
Rgds,
Melissa
Dear Melissa,
Everybody is hoping you have a podium finish lah. Nevermind myself and stringray will 'kow tim' the other long hair riders. hehe..
Have a good rest, you have a long journey tomorrow.
Good luck!
Best regards,
wusolow
Dear wusolow,
28th Novemeber sound great to me. I wiill meet you at 6:20am at Island plaza but without any long hair char bo..hihi
Thanks, ray
Hey Ray,
We may have to change our breakfast venue. It's 'Korban Day' for the muslims. That roti canai guy may not be open for business. We'll go to Raja Uda for breakfast instead. Can't take any chances. Hardly any chinese food stall in Penaga. After we 'pengsan'. Bring some PowerBar, Mars, or Snickers as backup.
Will keep you update of further developments and yes before I forget don't bring the long haired one ... a bit scary after your recent comment...hehehe!
Best regards,
wusolow
Dear wusolow,
If I cycle in the morning, I always skip breakfast. If I eat breakfast, I don't think I can cycle. May be I'm used to not eating breakfast during cycling unless we cycle until Noon. If we cycle until after 1200, then my fuel meter will go to "empty", time for me to fill some gas in my tummy...hihi..
I'm not too worry about the breakfast, Ray
Wow, looks like many of us are old timers making a comeback. I started back cycling in Dec 2008 - Penang Fellowship Ride being my maiden event. Now that you all count back the years of MIA from cycling, I didn't realised it had been 16 long years ...
Ray,
I normally cycle on Sat morning around 7.15 am starting from Sg. Ara. Later wanna try go Balik Pulau via Tlk Kumbar way now that I know what to expect after riding Round Island during CM Ride. You can join me to Balik Pulau if you are interested ( and all others ). Lawatan sambil makan ( ai, why else wanna go there... laksa, prawn crackers( it's really cheap and good... ) ). Before start can have a nice bowl of soft and silky tau fu fah near Sg Ara market ... I'm sure you agree with this agenda ... hehehe....
Rgds,
Melissa
Dear Melissa,
Would you like to ride to Kuala Muda area next Saturday? I'm inviting stingray and nightrider along. Awaiting their confirmation.
Tentatively meet us at jetty by 6.50am.
Best regards,
wusolow
Sorry guys I couldn't join you as I did my own run on 15th Nov. '09, alone as usual (the-lone-cyclist strikes again!).
When I rode by Island Plaza that particular morning, I saw a rider in front of the plaza. I wave to him and wondered if it was one of G Club member. Anyway I was heading to Kuala Kurau/Kuala Gula area. Man, that was one hell of a ride for me considering the distance I covered. That was the first time (yeah there is a first time to everything right?) I rode that far in a single day, 171.6 Km. Check out my trail at http://www.everytrail.com/ or my blog at http://the-lone-cyclist.blogspot.com/ I hope to update it by today.
Hi Mr. Misai,
Thanks for sharing your blog.
Hmmm.... I think I saw you cycling the other day but forgot where.
Can't miss a cyclist with flurorescent vest....
That is quite a distance that you cycled....
And it's really good the way you update the turns and junctions to take to get to that place.
We can use it as future reference.
Hope to see more of your trips posting in near future.
Rgd,
Melissa
Dear Melissa,
At least you don't consider me as 'siau lang', ride so far and alone some more. Really 'boh kiasu, boh kiasi, boh kiabor !! A lot of people are already having doubts whether I come from Tg Bungah or maybe Tg Rambutan??
Who knows, maybe if I'm up to it, I may decide to ride to Pendang and see you guys. Waahh! Very faarrr... Riding there is one thing but the thought of having to ride back the same day....aiyoh!
Good luck to you on your first jamboree!
Best regards,
wusolow
Wusolow,
You are "normal" to me.... cos I'm a lone cyclist too...
Cycling is a passion.
Only that person and the people who shared the same passion will understand....
Luckily hubby and I share the same passion ...
So I don't "nag" him when he goes cycling... :-)
I ride alone most of the time, riding whereever I feel like on that day.
If a non-cyclist sees it, they will label me "weird" lady...
Thanks for your wishes....
Hope to have a good outing.
Rgds,
Melissa
Dear Wusolow,
I think you just met me. I'm the one who is standing in front of the island plaza to promote "G-club".....hihi
Frankly speaking I don't have the stamina to cycle that far, I think I need at least 3 months training before cycling a long distance journey. If you don't mind, may be one day, i can join you for a long distance ride.
Best Regards, Ray
Thanks Ray,
Did you manage to recruit anyone that morning? Haha....I think I'm the only rider who wears a fluorescent vest when riding. You can spot me a couple of hundred metres away. I tell you that was one long trip. On my way back, it was raining so heavily in Sg Bakap that I had to stop for an hour. Half an hour break, and a cup noodles at BHP petrol station just before the turn off to Pg bridge. I was really tired, been out for more than 12 hours already. Another 40 minutes wait for the ferry (no wonder they are running at a loss, less ferry, less motorist) . I arrived home at 11.30pm after having some food and teh halia in front of Yeap Chor Ee building opposite ferry terminal.
Ray, you actually need 20% stamina & 80% determination.
Hey, do you want to do the Kuala Muda/ Pantai Merdeka ride with me?? We can do Kuala Muda first then if you feel up to it then proceed to Pantai Merdeka. It's a piece of cake lah! Kuala Muda I mean. Hehehe...
Cheers,
wusolow
Dear wusolow,
I only manage to recruit one rider (nightrider) and the other rider "put me on kite". For the long distance ride, do you normally ride on the weekend or weekday? and are you using a MTB or Racing bike?
Note: I think my "MTB bug" is spreading very fast... may be I'm going to get a new bike...
Best Regards, Ray
Hi Ray,
Wrong strategy lah! Next time have a few 'long hair one' ( char bor ) standing around, I can assure you the queue will strech until KFC.
Anyway I ride on weekend mostly. Weekdays have to 'cari makan' Wish I'm full time bike rider.
Sadly only one bike, MTB so road or mountain also MTB. Stock bike with a recent seat change because I do more long distance riding now. Ahh yes, I change my pedal to Shimano DX when I first bought the bike.
Best regards,
wusolow
Dear wusolow,
If I get some nice long hair char bor standing in front of the island plaza in the early morning, I afraid that the rider will cycle even faster lar... because they thought it's a "GHOST" ma.. hahhaa
If you are using MTB, then may be I can follow you. I'm just scare that you are using racing bike for a long distance ride...
Best Regards, Ray
Ray,
Welcome to the "dark" side....hahaha....
Kena poison kau-kau liao....
Do you do many long distance ride too ?
Just wondering how many of you are doing more road ride than off road.
Most of the time I see people cycling to go offroad trails like Farmer's Trail @ Sg. Ara.
Have any of you heard of cases cyclist getting robbed of their bikes ?
They'll push you down and grab your bike and cabut....
Rgds,
Melissa

Dear Melissa,
For the saturday, normally I go for solo on the round island ride. My journey will be started from Tanjung Tokong at 6.00am. It will then pass through Green Lane, Teluk Kumbar, Balik Pulau then coming back to Tamjung Tokong.
For the sunday, I will join the G-club events. Normally we will go offroad except the 2nd sunday of the month (teluk bahang ride).
If I can wake up in the morning, I will go for teluk bahang ride.
Ku Ku cyclist, Ray
Whoa, thats early 6am? You do this consistently? Trust me there are many like you, solo kaki ! I'm one of them. I used to cycle to work in Queensbay from P Tikus but lately because of my stomach problem I am taking it easier... Keep it up, will bump into you someday I'm sure. Cheers!
Dear Daniel,
I will try to stick to my cycling schedule provided I'm not too tired. On average per week, I will ride at least 4 times from tanjung tokong to teluk bahang. The sunday ride is a compulsory for me. If not captain will strangle me alive...Just joking captain. If I don't ride on Friday morning, then my leg will get gatal and will ride solo on saturday round island. I'm enjoy cycling on saturday morning, you can see many regular round island kaki...
Enjoy ever moment of the scenary...Ray
Wusolow, welcome to the club! I also just started riding my bike about 2 months ago after a break of 15 years. You'll be alright when riding with us. We eat... I mean (I eat) more than I bike on every outing with G Club but I really enjoy myself during these rides. I get a lot of encouragement and support from everyone. And hey, if you're interested in riding at night, let me know too. I'm staying in Tg. Bunga also. :) Be seein ya at the rides!
Cheers to you too!!!
Dear nightrider,
I wonder if you are game for day rides to Kuala Muda?? Or maybe we can have one done at night. Then you can be Batman and I'll be Robin. hehe!
If you're game, meet us at Island Plaza by 6.20am the latest.
I think you'll enjoy not only the ride but also the roti canai too.
Best regards,
wusolow
Wusolow,
Sounds like a good idea but normally I cannot ride on Saturdays as I have music class (my daughter's) that is. Sunday is fine with me.
dear wusolow, welcome back to the world of cycling.
"speed" is not the key when cycling with G Club cyclist. all you have to do is turn up and ride with us. you can check out our ride event via the event board.
don't worry about being slow as every trip, we will have "captain" (self appointed) anchoring behind the pack. we do not leave anyone behind.
join us tomorrow if you can. see ya.
cheers, Captain
