Dear Susumu,
Good thing you noticed your black colored chain. I had my chain cleaned after 10 years owning my bike. I did not know that I had to clean my chain in the first place!!! you can imagine the black hard grease and dirt i had to scrape off when I cleaned it. It took me almost 2 hours just to clean the chain.
Sorry I wasn't able to join you guys today. Had a very heavy night last night so I slept through my alarm. Thanks to El Kapitan for calling me or else they would have to wait for me this morning. Good ride by the way.
I left for Tropical Fruit Farm at 5 today and boy was it a hard ride. I think the alcohol was still in my system as I really struggled all the way starting from Batu Feringgi.
I also had applied what I learnt during the workshop today as my friend's bike got his chain stuck between the bottom bracket and the crank. Had a handy chain breaker and took the chain apart somewhere along the Batu Feringgi winding road and managed to put it back together.
This is another fantastic trail ride; strenuous yet manageable but most of all safe. We drove in 2 cars Robert and Captain and met up with the SGA grp at Yo Yo restaurant. On arrival, there must be at least 50 riders assembling there getting ready to ride off. Mercifullly, the grp broke up into a few smaller grps and each heading off to Carpet at their own schedule. Raymond and gang had an extended ride, i.e after carpet there are heading off to Balik pulau.
We rode on the main road for abt 400 m before entering a cemented double track trail which has a gradual ascent unlike Gertak Sanggul and it is good to warm up the riding muscles. The ascent become steeper and tapers down to a single track. The only traffic along the way is villagers on motorbikes and the grp was cooperative and intimidating enough to the motorcyclists by shouting BIKE!! that we were given wide berth to manourver.
From the google map above at the junction, there was a small hut where we rest (the one in the pic above of Richard Lee potrait), the ascent become steeper probably about 20 degree (steeper than Pearl Hill's steepest) and it stretches for about a kilometre and a bit winding. Gratefully as we were about to give up there is a flat stretch to rest the legs. Before reaching the flat grass garden that there call Carpet, there is another cemented climb which also stretches abt a kilometer or so and to our delight the Carpet unfolded in front of us. This is a private property and we are all "trespassing" but the owner was kind enough to provide chairs for us to sit as we socialised and talk bulls.
We must hv spent abt 1/2 hour at the carpet before the lure of Hokkien mee prompted us to get ready to descent. SGA Michael and our Captain commanded all their underlings to release some air from their tyres to facilitate the descend and lowered seat post for better control. Some of the fast and skilful riders as usual sped down but for cautious one like me, we braked all the way. It is definitely less steep and dangerous than Gertak Sanggul. When we reached the hut mentioned earlier, we make a detour, a short climb to the Bali House. Why Bali House I dont know. Looks more like a Thai house with some Buddhist statues .
It was a short 15 minutes uphill ride to this magnificent house but unfortunately the garden was locked. Hopefully the owner did not do it because of too many visits by cyclists!!
We finally reached Yo yo restraurant and the smiling owner weas welcoming all these hungry riders. There was a JAGA bicycle boy taking care of yr bike while your eat just like JAGA kereta where you hv to pay 1 ringgit ( No lah, just joking. Because so many riders eating there, there shud be one)
Total calorie burnt is a mere 1276 cal and 14.76 Km, less than my usual 5 rounds Pearl Hill but it is certainly worth the travel all the way to Sg Ara. Elevation gained is 470metre but the carpet is only at320 metre elevation. We all agreed that it is a grade 3 ride althought I would more incline to think it is 2 1/2 if there is a category for it
It just happened when we were down hill, one of our member has got a punchture.
Since we all were riding as a group, we all got together, and could fix it up within
10 min. When I was watching all the process of fixing it, everything went on so smooth
like we had a domonstration at workshop at New World. The point I wanted to mention
was that during fixing this punchure, the chain and gear were so clean and not dirty at all
,so after fixing puncher, no one got a dirty hand.
Since I started actual riding, I thought I learned how to clean my Bicycle, and I thought
I have done a good maintenace, but when I saw tihs clean chain and gear, I notice
my maintenance was not properly done, so right after coming back home, I have made
proper cleaning. Atter spending one hour cleaning, my bicycle chain started to shine!
I could enjoy my first off road riding ,besides, It was a real study ride to learn a real
maintenance. very educational ride indeed. Susumu!
