Sunglasses & Helmets - Fashion Wears?
Can't help but to write a bit on the importance of proper attires when riding due to a few serious head & neck bicycling related injuries whom I have attended to recently. The most recent one involving a teenager who was riding around his neighbourhood at 11 pm when a motorbike came ramming at him from the back. Sound familiar??? It is the same old story again.......riding without adequate/no lightings, no helmet etc. He was thrown forward and crashed on his left face and shoulder. The shoulder injury was ok and the facial contusion and abrasions and lacerations were unsightly at first glance but these are the least of his problems. It has been 2 months now since the accident and his face is back to his usual look. What is most disheartening is that when he was thrown forward he also fracture his left eye orbital bone and a fragment of bone had severed his left optic nerve and his is now permanently blind on that eye. There are also a few more instances where I have noticed cyclists felt and spectacles cracked and cut through the flesh. After looking through some articles, it is recommended that a good pair of sunglasses while riding preferably shattered proof should be worn. It not only shield your eyes from the intense uv light which can predisposed you to early cataract formation but it may also protect your eyes during crashes. I have got a nice pair of inter changeable adidas wears. Without it, grimes, dusts, insects and what not would have flown into my eyes and causes visual problem. Sunglasses should be made part and parcels of safety wear when we ride. Of course it make also make you look GAYA. Talking about looking smart, psychologically somehow when cyclist is in full regalia, motorist tends to slow down. Maybe they feel intimidated by the GARANG look !

Helmets is always a very controvesial point. There is some argument that helmets do not protect cyclists because it is not sturdy enough to withstand high impact and is only good for "gentle" fall. To make helmet compulsory will deter lots of potential riders and riding should be as casual as possible so as to get the mass out on the road and create some awareness. There might be some truth in it.
However, irrefutably the weakest part of our skull is the temporal bone area (refer diagram above). Even a gentle knocked such as a fall while going downhill could cause bleeding within the brain!! Below this piece of bone is the MIDDLE MENINGEAL ARTERY (you can see it in the diagram above as a faint line going upward) which run right across it and the luminal pressure is same as our blood pressure i.e 120/80mmHg assuming you are not hypertensive. Combination of a weakest link in the skull and a potential massive bleeder and injury to this area is potentially fatal. This is the main reason why world wide most authorities will encourage (no compulsion) to wear helmets while riding the bikes
The frontal and occipital bones are pretty hard and are usually spared. The mandible is another potential area of injury. When we break a fall, as in knocking into something, especially when going downhill, we may land on our chin. If you are lucky (or unlucky) the mandible fracture either at the body or the mental (front part) and absorbed the impact. This is easily remedial with surgical reduction and plating. However if the force is transmitted upward, the condyle ( the rounded part of the mandible that is in contact with the zygomatic bone) may break through the temporomandibular joint and protrude into the upwards, sometime into the brain!! this may also cause bleeding from the ear and causes hearing loss. This can be potentially difficult to treat even surgically.
I am so tempted to get on of these (as below)..................... a full face helmet. Guess to wear one of these and riding to Teluk Bahang, will looks ridiculous. But logically it will be excellent to protect your jaw and face during a fall. Somehow, it is associated with downhill bicycling so much so that it looks awkward to use otherwise.

i wear full finger most of the time (even for road) because i sweat a lot and wet fingers don't grip brake levers well.
here's my thoughts on full vs. half.
Full finger:
better grip on brake levers for sweaty fingers +
the tip of your finger don't feel cold while your palm feel hot +
depend on the material of the glove, you can't operate an iPhone while wearing full finger :) -
full finger does not ride up and dig in into the skin between your fingers because it fits more snugly +
you can't precise things with your finger with full finger. things suce as picking up a small screw or something -
Full finger gloves; I have not use it before when riding my bicycle. I agreed with all of u that it is more logical to wear it but like Tony"s doubtI wonder if it would be uncomfortable
After a while you will be able to get used to it,and of course full glove is very much safer then the half glove. Tony dun worry after a while you will love it for sure.... safety come first.....
For hand padding and fall protection, get a good pair of gloves!
Get a leather or a leather substitute short finger gloves. The benefit of using a sturdy material such as leather on the palm is not only long lasting wear but fall protection.
Saw a recent post cycling injuries with upper limbs injuries and noticed that there is some nasty skin abrasions on the ring and little fingers. Anyone got an answer why are short fingers gloves preferable to full fingers gloves?. This chap would have saved himself lots of fingers pain if he wore a full fingers gloves.
Hi, I suggest full finger glove. Once i had fell down at Batu Feringghi corner because of diesel spill and luckily i wore a leather full finger. It mesh had been torn out but all of my finger not injured except a small pain. It not just a stylish racy look but it could save our skin during tumbling down. Dont forget to wear helmet and glove.
Hi, I fully agree with doc / maraza, at least if you are mountain biking you should wear full finger protection. I had very bad hand / finger injuries once without protection (frontwheel got trapped in a cement gully when going downhill and I did a full endo). Ever since I have full finger gloves and it saved me already quite a few times from having bad bruises at the fingers / hand.
Hi Alprider,
Came across you in Balik Pulau last weekend, right? You rode solo from Teluk Bahang or did round island clockwise?
Just bought another pair of gloves recently. Are full finger gloves advisable for road riding too? Do they feel uncomfortable? But safety is the most important factor, right?
Hope to see you up in Balik Pulau again. I'm usually on the road on weekend mornings.
Cheers!
Hi Baby Husky, yes it was me in Balik Pulau doing a clockwise round island. Since I'm also on the road on weekend mornings, I will see you soon. (Btw. full finger loves are good for road bike as well, and you never will get frost bites
)
Fantastic article dr.
I fully agree that wearing helmet and other protective wears such as gloves and sunglasses can reduce injuries during an accident.
I personally find that fit-over-your-glasses sunglasses is great for cyclist. First its a polaroid sunglasses and if you're wearing glasses, it's another layer over your glasses and therefore can provide additional protection when you fall. You can buy from most optical shops for around rm 70-100 and also from www.shopping.howei.com for rm 59.
Hi Wayne,
if it is plastic. Pls think TWICE, it will break into sharp pieces and the consequences are hell. Please use sun glasses specific designed for cycling i.e. Oakley, Rudy Project and etc. They may be expensive but the material and design of the frames and lenses are specifically meant for cycling.
Just my 2C
SK
Hi Eskay,
Yes, you got the point. I had go back and check on my sunglasses. Well, i found that the material is flexible plastics. It provide a ''additional'' protective layer over spectacle and against UV. It is not a specially made glasses for cyclists, but I used it for all round purposes. For example, hiking and driving.
I found an article which advice us that sports sunglasses should be made of plastics instead of breakable glasses. http://ezinearticles.com/?Cycling-Sunglasses---A-Cyclists-Only-Cool-Garb!&id=166359
Are you sure that Oakley are fit-over glasses? To me, they are fashion glasses. It wouldn't suit me if i'm wearing my spectacles.
Hi Wayne, thanks. Must go and get myself a pair soon.
Hi Doc, what a timely article. Helmets are a MUST! As you know I speak from first hand experience. You know what happened to me two weeks ago and the first thing I did when I got home from hospital was to look for my helmet. I always thought how crazy I was to pay RM300 for a featherweight helmet seemingly moulded from styrofoam. But looking at the damaged corner of the helmet which took the brunt of the impact, it probably saved my brains from being spluttered on the road. It's slightly cracked so I'll have to see uncle at Chin Aik again for a new one. So please make sure that anyone who wants to cycle wears a helmet.
You are right, my spectacles broke too. So I have to go find a pair of gaya ones.
I'm okay now and as handsome as ever, despite the 8 stitches on my face. My jaw has been straightened by the fall so I don't have a crooked smile anymore. Poor Baby Husky is still at the shop and I'll be collecting her on Saturday and riding again on Sunday morning.
Cheers and always keep your eyes on the road in FRONT! No looking at girls!
Dear Papa Husky,
I'm so sorry to hear that you caught an accident. I hope that you have a speedy recovery. My last ride is at balik pulau eco ride. I think I will be riding again after april 14.... hope to see you in balik pulau soon..
Warmest Regards, Ray
Hi Ray, long time no hear. No, I was just being careless. It happened on the tarred road across the padi field in the kampung next to my house. We were already almost home. I cycled quite fast on that stretch. I had already slowed down and down geared when I turned around to see whether my wife had kept up with me. I didn't notice the bump right in front of me and I hit it at the precise moment when my shoulders were half turned so I lost control of the handle bar and down I went. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! But as I mentioned, I'm okay now. Better it happened to me than any cyclist friend I know.
So when out riding I hope ALL cyclists will concentrate on their bikes and the road ahead and leave all the chit chatting to when we stop for water breaks. Always be in control of your bike.
Cheers and ride with you again soon.
Hi Papa Husky , long time no on . I heard that you fell down from the bike . How are you now ? Hope you will recovered from that soon . When can you back to cycling ?
Regards from , Jack
Hi Jack, yeah lo. Careless and didn't concentrate. Eight stitches on the face but am okay now. So can't be turning back to look out for others when you are riding. Have to keep your eyes in front to look out for danger signs.
We will ride together again, don't worry.
If I ever have to look back, I'll make sure I check the front first for any potholes, bump, bend etc and that there's enough space on the side in case I sway a little.
