Mangrove Project
Since Daniel has put up a poll on the mangrove project, let me elaborate on it. This project was initiated by William and Daniel even before the 2008 and it failed because there is no approval from the state government and it is illegal to simply plant the trees . Anyway, these two musketeers tried to plan a few off the coast of gurney drive
and now you can see a few growing (Refer Daniel article on Renmin Bakau at
Since then William, the chef from Balik Pulau has already got an official approval from the Jabatan Perhutanan to plant 5 hectares off Gurney Drive. What an irony to plant voluntarily with own financial resources also got to beg for approval!!! He now needs a platform to launch the project which i think is an excellent project. If the mangroves matured, it wil attract a whole world of new ecosytem. Flora and fauna ile fishes, birds, crabs, prawns etc will thrive there. 5 hectares is a very good size. and elevated walkways for pedestrians and bicycles could be built as a second phase.
We have discussed about the merit of incorporating the mangrove into the bicycle lane campaign and rope in CIMB Foundation. YB Phee Boon Poh, exco for Penang State for health and environment whom I spoke to few days ago is ago very gung ho to get the CIMB Foundation in. The G club would not have the energy to maintain the Bakau project which will stretch for 10's of years. YB Phee gave his words that the state governement will take over the maintenance of the place if it is planted. We will be presenting a proposal and budget paper to the CIMB FOUNDATION officers on the 23/4/10 at G HOTEL and they specifically asked to see and talk to William first.
