My Trek 1000SL Major Makeover

This was how it looked like when I first bought the bike from Gary CCI. Bontrager parts all round and Shimano SORA 8 speed components(except the RD, which is a Tiagra 9 speed and the 105 SPD-R pedals). It has served me well for the last two years. But lately when I checked, the rim walls had become valleys, bottom bracket started to make clicking sound and the right shifter was always jam due to wear and tear. Sent the bike to Gary, and he scolded me for putting too much stress on the components! I like to ride mah...:)

Then one of my friends asked me if I were interested in getting the Miche groupo. He promised me to be a good alternative to Shimano parts since nowadays there are so many parallel imports and some may have been factory rejects but sell as good ones by some unscrupulous sellers. He was pushing for the Primato range, which the price was definitely beyond my pocket!! Furthermore, my bike, Trek 1000SL is merely a low end model from Trek. It wouldn't make sense by fixing a groupo that costs four times the price of the frame. So after flipping over the catalog I decided to pick the Team 10 groupo, which I thought would be more reasonable to my frame. So, once decided I got my friend to get the groupo for me. It was an argonizing wait of more than a month and finally arrived last week.

I weighed the bike before the "upgrade". It tipped the scale at 9.4kg. Typical for road bike with the basic groupo. I wasn't expected much from the new components since they are also considered to be basic range too. The only differences is the group comes in 10 speed configuration. This Miche Team 10 gruppo is a mix of Miche own and Campagnolo components. The Campagnolo parts are from the 10 speed Xenon line. I was told that this Michelin subsidiary is actually the OEM to Campagnolo. That explains why they are campy compatibles.

The Miche Reflex wheels that come with the gruppo are quite heavy to my liking, 2.2kg!

It took just one day for my friend to fix it up at one of the LBS in mainland. When it was done I was busy supervising my guys to install partition in one of factories in Bayan Baru. He called me up and told me my bike was ready to be picked up.

So the six million dollars question to him was, "how heavy?" "9.2kg", He said. Ok lah. Actually we expected lighter. I think I know where did the extra weight come from. The original setup for the crank and the cassette themselves are 50/34 and 12-25 respectively. If I have not decided to change them to 53/39 and 12-27 respectively, the total weigh of the bike would be less than 9kg. Kiasu mah...;) I have also changed the stem to a longer Easton EA50 stem, which my friend graciously loaned me for the time period until I have decided to get my own 3T stem and Deda handle bar(Must have!!!). That longer stem may also contribute to heavier mass too.

How did the bike with new setup ride like? I took a small round when picked up the bike from my friend. The wheels were new, so definitely the bike rode like a magic carpet. I am going to try it out for the metric century ride to Pantai Merdeka this coming Sunday and see how it goes. I don't expect it to climb well though since it has such a heavy set of wheels.

I know some will question the rationale of upgrading a bike such as this Trek 1000SL. Well, lets put it this way. It is for self satisfaction. I am old school. If time allows, I would prefer to build my own bike with the components of my choice. The stock components may not to my liking. Furthermore, I have grown used to this bike. If I sell this bike with its original companents at much reduced price and add another 3-4k to get a new bike with higher end components I would have to get used to the new bike. It will take time, which I hate the most.

Of course, the story is not going to end here. I am already playing with ideas of "upgrading" the saddle to my favorite brand, Salle Italia SLR or Flite and a set of lighter wheels. I have been looking at Soul's S3 wheelset, which tip the scale at 1.5kg at the fraction of price that I would pay for more popular brands wheels like Mavic Ksyrium or Fulcrum 3 wheelsets. With these onto my bike, it would be able to weigh further down to 8.4kg. Again, it is for personal satisfaction and a matter of own preference. I can't explain it to you....:) You have to do it yourself in order to understand why.

Here is the photo of the bike after the make over(see below). One thing I like about Trek 1000 SL is the weight distribution. The bike felt balance and not heavier on one side, not like some bikes that I carried before that the rear wheel is always heavier. After the make over the weight distribution also felt the same, well balance. It would be nice to see if it is really the case by putting the weighing machine each under front and rear wheels to see they are really 50-50 weight distribution.

I must thank my friend for making such good job for fixing it up and also manage to correct a problem of the bike that it will sway to one side if I left my hands off the handle(it was due to bent drop out). Thanks buddy. I'll come to you again if I need someone to pick up a set of Soul S3.0 wheelset for myself in future!

It has been two years since I bought this bike back in 2010. Few major upgrades have been done on this bike- full drivetrain conversion(Shimano SORA 8 speed to Miche Team 10 10 speed system), wheelset(OEM Formula/Alexrim wheelset to Miche Reflex to Soul S2.0), saddle(Bontrager sport saddle to San Marco Carbon FX). But I have not done anything on the cockpit(other than changing the 90mm Bontrager stem to a loaned 100mm Easton EC50). Part of the reasons is I have been looking around aluminium stem and handle bars that suits within my budget.
Then an opportunity arose few days back when a friend of mine asked if I were interested on stuffs from Edge Design USA. I know Edge produce very nice roadie wheels, especially their mid and high profile carbon wheelsets are praised by pro cyclists around the world. But I had not heard of them producing stuffs for cockpits.
So my friend showed me the stuffs and the price of their aluminium stem and handlebar. Well, the price was really nice to hear. Two times cheaper than my favorite brands(TTT, Deda) for the same alumiunium stem and handlebar.
Moreover they have 42cm handlebar for their aluminium handle model since it is quite hard to come by with that width. After the much pestering from the seller, I decided to wrap the handlebar with the Edge handle bar tape as well.
Well the upgrade did not stop there. Upon inspection, he found my chain was quite stretchy(> 0.75). Got it changed with a sightly used Campy Record 10 speed chain.
I am going to try out the bike with "new" chain and new cockpit(110mm stem with 42cm handlebar) this coming Sunday how it goes. A short ride around the taman has proved the upgrade made the cockpit more comfy to hold. I guess this is going to be the last upgrade to my Trek. Everything, except the carbon Bontrager seat post has been changed. The next upgrade(if there is a next upgrade) would definitely be a new bike.

Hope this would my last upgrade to my "cheapo" Trek 1000 SL! Got this pair of showroom condition Soul S2.0 SL for a song from its owner in Singapore. It was an argonizing wait of 4 weeks to get them to my hands in Penang.
The wheels have a claimed weight of 1330g(without skewers). I wanted to confirm it myself. But my friend said, "Don't spoil the market, ok?"..:)
I spun the wheel and yes, it will spin forever and ever...just like what others claim in weight winnies and bike forums!
wah! so early unleash your KOM weapon oledi.
lighter than dura ace c24.
Naah, a mere coincidence that I received them before the KOM/QOM event. Was hoping to use them on IS2010. Too bad, due to wrist injury I had to cancel my plan to attend the IS2010. But there's always a next time!
Bought this beauty from my friend, Adren, 140g! He wanted to loan me his Campy carbon saddlepost in order to compliment this Aspide FX Carbon. A closer look to this Campagnolo Record Carbon saddle was actually no different from my Bontrager Race Carbon post. They weighted the same too. A Bontrager OEM-ed, maybe? Anyway, I thanked him for the offer and decided to keep my present Bonty post.
The total weight immediately reduced by 200g. Probably a psycho effect, but the bike really feel lighter to ride overall now.
Now, if I could get my hand laid on a pair of Soul S2.0SL....
Very nicely done. I like the upgrade and refurbishing method myself. Adds value to something we've grown to treasure over the years
you upgraded almost everything on your bike.
most riders after riding their roadie for a while there is a strong bond between the man & machine. the duraace c24 clincher wheelset is less than 1.4kg, can consider if want to lighten the bike.
Did a quick 17km in the Prai Industrial Area when I got out from my office today. Although the wheels are heavier, they spin quicker than my old wheels. Also the shifting was good. The thumb shifts are easier to engage, so do the hood shifters. And I can downshift now when I am on hood. What really impress me is the brake hood. They are more comfortable to hold than my old SORA hoods.
I did the 17km ride in half an hour, which traslate to about 34kmh average. Mostly was on 53-17/19. Felt almost like I was on my last DA 7800 and Mavic Cosmic equiped Giant TCR ONCE.
Tomorrow will be a real test to the new groupo. A ride to Pantai Merdeka and back. Hope it will hold up to its Campy heritage!
PS: I've thought of that DA wheelset too. But one, some sold at heaviely discounted may be factory rejects and two, most sold do not come with campy freebody!
went fairpark this afternoon, plan to signup/pay for century ride and get receipt.
the address printed on the form downloaded from website led me to a place with a building with no. 55I, 55A, 55B & 55C. in the form it stated no. 55 only, to make things worse, no contact no.
went to bikeshop and luckily the organizing chairman was few shops away in the coffee shop. receipt book not with him so gonna bank-in to the account no. and send them the slip.
later, went home check website again, notice the contact no. are on the web. wasted so much time running around. shud have just bank-in and email them the details.
Join us tomorrow!
Meet at Pg Jetty 6.30pm. I'll wait for Pg Riders at B'Worth Jetty at 7am since I am currently in Prai now.
can't make it tomolo, not in Penang. In Ipoh now, that' s why took the opportunity to stop by fairpark signup century ride.
Tried the bike during the Pantai Merdeka ride. As expected, it was a silky ride to Pantai Merdeka and back. I did feel the weight of wheels though. During the climb before the next regroup point at Pantai Merdeka, either I was exhausted or really the weight's taking its toll, I had to use the largest cog to nego the slope.
Overall, it was better than my last groupset. But definitely a set of lighter wheels are in the pipeline for sure!
