Hello from a foreign cyclist visiting Penang
Hello Penang Cyclists,
I'll be visiting Pulau Tikus this summer (July/August) and interested in doing some riding. I'm from Canada but I used to live in Penang years ago. My cycling background is mainly Triathlons and more recently I'm getting into Cyclocross.
I'll be donig a half-Ironman in September so I need to train while in Penang and I'd prefer to avoid spin classes at a gym.
I'll need to buy a cheap bike (old steel road gibke / hybrid, anything really) and to find some good safe routes to ride. Maybe some bike stores rent road bikes?I'm hoping you can share some suggestions with me.
Cheers,
Mark G.

Dear Mark G,
Great to hear that you will be cycling in Penang. A warm welcome to Penang and G Club !
Our chairman Dr Lim is cycling with a Trialtalon group and he will be touch with you soon.
Cheers !
Hi Mark,
Welcome to our site. Well if you are coming to Penang and not wanting to slacken on your Ironman training, you are welcome to join the Penang Triathlon group. Couple of them just done the Langkawi Ironman and a few them are training for the coming one. I ride with them often. Usually we ride on Sunday and after a long ride (not really sub 100 Km), there will be a short 5 or 6 K run and if triathlon event nearing a swim at a local swimming club with end of the day.
I would advise you to bring your own bicycle. Rental bikes are crappy and it is probably dangerous to ride on the road, Not telling when the wheels or Pedal or worse still the saddle going to drop off.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm not sure I'm in good enough shape to keep up with the local Ironmen. I'm only training for a half-IM and from what I remember of the Penang climate, I'll be spending my first week panting in the shade just trying to get used to the heat. BTW - I just heard that IM Malaysia may be cancelled and that IM70.3 Putrajaya is no longer on - that would be dissapointing. I was hoping one day to come do one of these.
I can't bring my bike this trip, so I'll either buy a cheap and/or used bike or find a gym with spin bikes. Does anyone know of any gyms in Pulau Tikus with spin bikes?
Howdy Mark,
That's a nice cervelo tri bike you have there in the picture, I am drooling :-) You have missed IM Malaysia (Langkawi) which was held on end of February this year, for IM70.3 Putrajaya, the date has not fixed yet, check their website to find out the actual date http://www.ironman703putrajaya.com.my/
Anyway, lining up there are a few 'not so painful' olympic distance triathlons you can take part in while you are in Malaysia, ie, Port Dickson Triathlon on July, Desaru Triathlon on Oct, check out www.triathlonmalaysia.com to mark ur calender.
Also check out http://www.quickrelease.com.my/racecal.html to find out other sport events (Powerman Dualthron, Marathon) happening all over in Malaysia for year 2010.
There are a few gyms in Pulau Tikus and close to Pulau Tikus that offer daily spin bikes classes (LesMills RPM) , checkout Celebrity Fitness Gurney Plaza, Fitness First Island Plaza and Absolute Fitness at Herritage Club.
Hope these information are useful to you.
Looking forward to 'see' u on the road :-)
