Description: This is one of the proposed training rides for those who would like to take part in Ipoh Century Ride(see http://www.pbb.com.my/node/911). It will begin with a series of metric century rides and then an imperial century rides follow through. We did our first metric century during the labor day weekend on the island. The third traiming will be at the mainland. The route : Penang Jetty - Bukit Mertajam - Machang Bubuk - Kulim - Karangan - Sungai Sedim and back. The distance is to be in the range of 120km, and the terrain is slightly undulating.. A short briefing will be given before the ride. We would like to use this opportunity to learn how to draft, relay and how to ride in consistent speed.
I am practicing No Helmet No Ride policy. If you show up without helmet I may ask you to go home or cancel the ride altogether. Strictly no compromise!
Note: Please take note that ride plan may change due to weather or other cycling events. Do contact the ride master to confirm before the date.

Hi Alan. Some things have come up in these few weekends and won't be able to join you guys for both century ride trainings. I have to do some adjustments to include Sundays to join you fellas in your rides. Firstly, my bike will be coming in next weekend and will be ready on road by the following week. This will be my first time in donkey years since I have ridden on a racer. I only have weekdays to train in the evenings.
May I please have your two sens on this issue of training on my own due to the facts above? Do I have time to train for the Ipoh Ride? I am afraid under distance training will affect my performance in Ipoh as you guys have gone more than 100km on your first ride. I have done 102km Round Island on MTB and came back cooked! Total time done was 6hrs 10min. Actual ride was 4hrs 34min. What is your best advise on this?
Appreciate your comments and criticisms.
Regards
Peter Ooi
In the last century ride to Pantai Merdeka, my average speed was about 27kph and took about 3.5hours moving time to finish 98km with the total time of 4.5hours(includes rest and regroups). But the terrain was quite flat.
I clocked 2 hours and 45 minutes in my last 76km round island ride on my Trek and I did it nonstop. MTB on knobbies tends to create more more friction. If you were really want to train on your own for the Ipoh Century Ride, try to clock 200km at least per week. When you finally get your road bike, join us. The next ride after this Sungai Sedim ride will be to Tanjung Dawai near SP, total distance will be about 130km. After that I will think whether we should do the route suggested by Richard Lee, a 180km ride to and fro Bukit Merah Resort.
Don't worry about if you can't keep up. You will tend to go faster in group. We will train to draft and relay as well.
Hi,
I plan to put up a night before the Ipoh Century ride on 1 August. Will appreciate very much if you could advise which hotel is the most convenient to get to the starting point.
Thanks & cheers

eskay:
I believe Bukit Kinding Resorts do have rooms for rent.
We will be discussing about it during the Sunday ride since the date is near.
must ride to Bukit Merah Resort...hehehe!!!
wat is the constant speed like?
30 km/h.
I am thinking of splitting the group to multiple group to cater for riders with different capability if the turn out allows me to do so. Average speed may not be 30kmh. It may be faster or slower depending which group you ride with. You are welcome to join us...:)
Target time to finish the ride before noon though.
i hope we can ride in a group and finish the ride before noon.
Daniel:
There is the ultimate goal that we will ride in group. But before we do that we need to assess the capability of the rest of participating riders and from there we would adjust accordingly.
I hope this third training ride we will be able to get more riders to be in the fast train....;)

6 riders, me, Daniel Lee, Darren Cool, En, Jonathan aka chicken and ken soon showed up. There was supposed to be more riders. Some decided not to come since it was raining on the island. Ironically, there was rise and shine in Prai.
We started the ride at around 7.15am after everyone was accounted for.
Some of the riders were new to this metric century ride. Since our aim to ensure everybody is riding in the group, our pace was slower than our usual pace. I reached my Prai home at 3.15pm, 8 hours after we started. Average speed was 24kmh. Moving time: 5 hours 11 minutes according to my Garmin GPS track record.
This is the first ride that's longer than our usual 100km distance ride. We were already talk about doing more such ride in future!
